Misha Collins Talks More on Castiel’s Role in Season 8

A couple of new spoilers have surfaced from EW and TVOvermind in recent days that talk more about Castiel’s role in season 8.   Sounds like Castiel and Sam may start to strengthen their friendship.

EW posted:

“While talking to Misha Collins about his charitable scavenger hunt, he also confirmed a hunch we’d had about the last time Dean saw Cas. It was, in fact, while Dean was exiting Purgatory. But there’s much more to it than that. “That very moment is a pivotal moment. I think Dean is confused about what happened at that moment and won’t actually find out what happened then until episode 7,” he reveals. “It’s going to take a while to see that moment play out.”

But when Cas does return topside, look for him to be “reinvigorated with a sense of purpose,” says Collins. “He essentially feels like he has to do good in order to right the wrongs of his past. So he starts to collaborate with Sam and Dean for that reason — so that he can continue to try to make things right. He’s no longer paying penance, really, because it’s no longer an act of suffering for him. But he’s doing his best to right the wrongs of his past.” Doing so won’t be as easy as he hopes, however. “He’s doing that in ways that help Sam and Dean and then, ultimately, it might also make life — as per usual with the Supernatural universe — complicated for Sam and Dean. At first, it seems like everything is hunky dory. But things quickly fall apart.”

TVOvermind ‘s article stated:

As Castiel gets back into the groove, we’ll see something that isn’t always typical for Supernatural: Castiel spending some time with Sam.  Now that Cas is out of Purgatory, Misha (when asked if Cas might have any interaction with Sam if he doesn’t feel very charitable towards Benny) said that the show has just begun “playing out any dynamic between Sam and Cas” but then went on to jokingly bemoan that he hoped this would stop because “that means I’m working with Jared more.”  As for Sam’s feelings on a closer relationship with Castiel, star Jared Padalecki joked that “Sam’s always thought Cas looks weird.  Weird hair.  His nose is kinda funny, the jacket….”

But seriously, Sam will be happy when Castiel gets out, despite their uneven history: “I think when Sam was actively hunting, I think he and Cas never saw eye-to-eye and Cas understandably had some resentment for Sam.  I mean, Sam did canoodle with the very thing that Castiel hates the most…with demons.  So Cas, being the noble type that he is, always held that against Sam.  And Sam is a smart guy, he gets that.  I feel like now, Sam…Sam’s had a tendency to try and take the higher road, [which] sometimes put himself in a bad situation like ‘good intentions pave the road to hell’, but now he’s just happy to see Cas.”
